Update, as promised. Your solution worked perfectly but it's a pity that the default behaviour of Text/Split (to dispose of the separator character(s) and thus the 'nulls' in the string as well) can't be changed. Quite a bit of modelling is required is insert dummy 'nulls' and then remove them afterwards. Is there a way to use Upload CSV to do the job instead?
