A while back, we made some changes to the way the client-side elements are sent to the browser. Our aim was to minimize the number of requests, and to that effect we decided to merge all .css files in the web folder (and the styles subfolder) into a single response (we do the same with .js in the web folder and the scripts subfolder) - this explains why the @import directive is not really needed as long as the files are in the correct folder.
