Miscellaneous/Get Email supports IMAP (and other protocols) - see here, for more details.
We have no plans at present to implement generic I/O plugins. Nevertheless, I've added this as feature request #552.
Some of our commercial projects required interaction with client-side devices, in which case we used a specially written applet accessed via Display Actions/Call Java Applet, to communicate with the device.
