The application server can handle project updates without stopping tomcat.
Make sure that when updating the project files on your server, you also update the .timestamp file found in the project's root folder (you can specify an alternate filename/location via the timestamp_files context parameter).
Tersus checks this file's content to determine whether a new version is available and should be loaded.
The indication to the end-user that the project has been updated is an application reload/refresh in the browser which occurs automatically once the browser receives focus.
To avoid possible memory issues resulting from repeated application reloads, please make sure you've allocated enough memory and specified the jvm parameter -XX:+CMSClassUnloadingEnabled in your tomcat setup as described in the Performance & Security Considerations section at the end of server installation document (http://www.tersus.com/#Id=242).
Regards,
David
