For native apps, the application is downloaded from the app-store and installed on the device with all the required files (images, css, javascript, models etc.). The server is accessed only to invoke services.

For web apps, the application files are downloaded from the server the first time you use the app (and are updated automatically as needed), so the server is used both for downloading/updating the application files and for running services.

Things to consider:

Techincally, the differences between the "Mobile Application" and "Native Mobile Aplication" tempaltes are:

The former has a separate <Desktop View> in addition to <Mobile View>
The second is set up in advance for using a local database on the client (the property "clientSideDatabase" is set to "local" on the root system(

Even with a Native Mobile Application, you will still need to deploy a server if you use services in the model

A Native Mobile Application can still use it though a web browser (as long as the application doesn't use device-specific capabilities like the Camera). This is how our "iPhone Simulation" works.
