I wonder whether your application requirements dictate that data (game status) regarding each user must be stored on the server, in a centralized fashion, which will indeed require some unique identifier such as username, or whether it is sufficient to use the client-side capabilities, which being client-side means the stored data is inherently unique to the device/browser on which they are running.
