The Update Excel Table & Update Excel Text plugins handle XLS files created by Excel (or any other spreadsheet which is capable of creating this format).
At present the XLSX format is not supported, so if you're using Microsoft Office 2007 or higher, be sure to save your template files in the older XLS format.
Formatting in the Template is maintained while Tersus processes it, so if you follow the instructions in the documentation links you referenced, you should be able to output a file similar to your screenshot.
