I have no knowledge Office Online integration capabilities and APIs, so there's very little info I can provide.
Assumming there are similarities to Goodle Docs, a minimal integration option is to save a url to the document in question in the application's database, and use it to launch the document online. Obviously, the document content itself will be stored in the cloud reather than the database or application server filesystem.
